My Poetry - Whippoorwills and Orange Blossoms

Oh to go back in time and be sitting on the patio,
Listening to the whippoorwills chirping just after sunset,
Smelling the orange blossoms on the wind,
Not realizing that those moments would be so special to me once you were gone.

That now, as I sit and listen to the crickets chirping,
Awaiting the first days of spring when the whippoorwill's return,
Anxious to hear that glorious sound again,
Just so I can smile in memory once more.

I wish I could go back in time,
Carrying with me the knowledge that I have today,
So that I would know to make the most of those memories,
And treasure you more before you're gone.

Now the sounds of cars have replaced the peace and quiet,
Homes have replaced the orange groves,
The neighborhood I've grown up in is not the same,
And the whippoorwills aren't as numerous as before

But I have those lovely memories,
Of you in your rocking chair,
The creak of the wood as you rocked and we talked,
About the days gone past and how they're used to be more whippoorwills before
