My Song - Fragment
(1st verse)
As the fragments of glass float around you
A psychedelic swirl of life flashes in your irises
Lights flash in the dark sky
Like twinkle lights on Christmas Eve
Is this where your heart fails to try?
(chorus)
In the night sky
The stars are all so beautiful
Did you know that they were made for you?
(2nd verse)
Peaceful chaos is all around you
You didn't even feel the cuts of the metal
Nick your skin
Raindrops fall upon you
And your tongue taste the bitterness of the flame
(chorus)
In the night sky
The stars are all so beautiful
Did you know that they were made for you?
Thunderclouds
Smile their wrath upon you
And the booming sound that holds you down
Is beating like a drum
(outro)
Peaceful chaos is all around you
Did it hurt when your breath stopped
As the light flickered from your eyes?

Meaning:
This is a song I wrote this afternoon. It came to me fairly quickly and when I finished, I was astounded. It's metaphorical, it's spiritual yet vague, and most importantly, it's something that can mean so many different things to different people, which is exactly what I was going for. I'm going to post the lyrics first, then a line by line meaning of it. But before you read the line by line interpretation, I'd love it if you would try to figure it out for yourself first, and then comment either here or on Facebook/Twitter. This is something I'm striving for... to be vague in the story itself, so that the reader/listener can come up with an interpretation that fits them.
I'm not going to lie, it's a sad song if you just read the words for what they are. But in my mind, its actually quite happy. It's about a girl driving in a car. She gets in an accident and as the vehicle is rolling over, time slows down. If you've ever been in any kind of accident, whether car or something else, you might remember it as if you had gone through it in slow motion. It's how your brain processes it. So this girl's brain slows everything down. She sees the chaos going on around her, but everything is peaceful and calm. When I started writing this, I could picture the music video to it, and that helped me with some of the lyrics. Also, it takes place at night. I do a lot of driving at night, and sometimes I fear things like this happening to me, so it was fairly easy to let the fear flow into the song. But... at the same time, she's calm, because her faith in God is so strong, she knows that whatever happens, she will be ok.
“As the fragments of glass float around you
Your caught in a psychedelic swirl of life flashing in your irises”
This is the rolling of the car. As the glass breaks and moves around her as the car rolls over and over, she sees the light of the moon shine off the glass as prisms, which is beautiful to her. And I imagined in the video that the prisms would be reflective off her eyes.
“Lights flash in the dark sky
Like twinkle lights on Christmas Eve”
The lights she sees are car lights driving down the freeway past her.
“Is this where your heart fails to try?”
It's not that she doesn't want to live, it's just a matter of is it her time to die?
“In the night sky
The stars are all so beautiful
Did you know that they were made
For you?”
The stars she sees, in my mind's eye would later be revealed in the video as the lights from the police cruisers, ambulances, and firetrucks. So the line about the stars being made for her, is because they came in response to the accident. But it also hints to God in that line as well. Duality. I love it! We often wonder why God allows things to happen. God allows the accident, but it doesn't mean it was a bad thing.
“Peaceful chaos is all around you
You didn't even feel the cuts of the metal
Nick your skin”
If you've ever been in a car accident, it's quite chaotic, even if you aren't injured. But as the firemen are trying to get her out of the car, she's just focused on the stars and the prisms and she doesn't feel a thing.
“Raindrops fall upon you
And your tongue taste the bitterness of the flame”
This is the spot where I wasn't sure if people would get confused. In the video it would show that there was no rain. In fact it would be various fluids (gasoline) from the car dripping down and splashing nearby her, and the spray would hit her face.
“In the night sky
The stars are all so beautiful
Did you know that they were made
For you?
Thunderclouds
Smile their wrath upon you
And the booming sound that holds you down
Is beating like a drum”
As her eyes start to focus, the lights come into view. The thunderclouds... that's the sirens and horns honking and all the chaotic noise that goes on in an accident. The booming sound holding her down, is her heavy heart. At this point she realizes what's happened and that her heart is making it's final climactic beat before it stops.
“Peaceful chaos is all around you
Did it hurt when your breath stopped
As the light flickered from your eyes?”
I imagine her ceasing to exist with a smile on her face. The chaos all around her, but her faith in God prevailed to keep her calm. And as the lights fade, everyone realizes around her, that even though she's dying, they notice the smile on her face... she's OK with that. So when I said earlier that God allows things to happen for a reason, that part comes to fruition here. Yes, she dies. But in her death, she could have had the ability to affect others with her faith. What kind of power is that? God works in amazing and mysterious ways that we might not always understand when it happens. I was at the Jars of Clay concert and talking to a new friend of mine who had cancer. And an inspirational thing he said to me was that even if he hadn't beaten the cancer, he was fine with that, because he KNEW where he would end up. And this girl... she knew it was all going to be OK, because she was going to God. So while on the surface it's a sad song, I find it actually quite happy.
