My Song - Apartheid

(verse 1)
I can love my religion but I can’t like yours
My people go around starting Holy wars
We judge you for your orientation
And try to force you into a box of perfection

We’ve got preachers goin’ ‘round spreading hate
Boycotting the ones who died keeping us safe
Saying our Nation is going to pay
I guess they don’t realize, He wasn’t born in the U.S.A.

(pre-chorus)
It’s so sad
Yeah
It’s so sad

(chorus)
That a part of the ID of Christianity
Is to segregate the reality
When what we need is a proper idea
Of who we need to be
Don’t segregate
God’s love
Don’t apartheid

(instrumental)

(verse 2)
You can’t just give rights to women and then take them away
Over 2000 years later you’re still stuck in a cave
Hypocrisy is rampant; belief is not what it seems
When we can’t seem to follow simple words on a page

How can you walk up to a person and say you hate that their gay
But then profess that you still “love them anyway”
You can’t believe in Him unless you firmly believe
That the life that He gave was meant for everybody

(pre-chorus)
It’s so sad
Yeah
It’s so sad
Yeah
It’s so sad

(chorus)
That a part of the ID of Christianity
Is to segregate the reality
When what we need is a proper idea
Of who we need to be
Don’t segregate
God’s love
Don’t apartheid

(instrumental)

(pre-chorus)
It’s so sad
Yeah
It’s so sad
Yeah
It’s so sad

(chorus)
That a part of the ID of Christianity
Is to segregate the reality
When what we need is a proper idea
Of who we need to be
Don’t segregate
God’s love
Don’t segregate
God’s love
Don’t segregate
God’s love
Don’t apartheid

MEANING:
There are two ways to pronounce the word "Apartheid".  Either a-par-tad (as in tater tot... not tattoo) or a-par-tid (as in tide).  I chose the former for the song.  The basic meaning of apartheid is segregate (it rhymes with it actually).  Some of you may know where the term comes from... in a time of racial hatred in South Africa, where they were segregated forcefully.  Read this link if you're interested in it.  The movie District 9 touches on that only with aliens.

The idea behind the song is the fact that I see more and more Christians segregating themselves from the Bible.  Our God calls us to love, yet I see so much hate.  We are letting our personal opinions get in the way of God, and twisting God's word around to serve our own purpose.  I realize that we all won't read the Bible the same way, but our God does not say judge others.  Our God does not say hate people.  Our God does not say start wars and force people into our beliefs.  And it's really sad that people still believe that Jesus is white.  The 2nd verse hits on the fact that the Southern Baptists recently revoked the right for women to be lead pastors, when there is nothing in the Bible that states we can't lead a church.  In fact, there's many instances in the Bible OF women LEADING the men in worship.  This verse also hits on the whole "Hate the sin, not the sinner" quote that I despise.

This song might piss you off, and I won't lie, I pulled no punches with this.  I was inspired by Derek Webb's "What Matters More" and I wanted to take it to another level.  I'm tired of just sitting back and letting this anger fester.  I AM angry with some Christians.  I see the way they speak to people, professing their faith and making a mockery of it with their words.  It's about high time we get over ourselves and do what God asks of us... and that is to love.  We need to learn to serve HIM instead of ourselves.
